Indian Cinema: Waiting for a new era…

Bollywood triangle love stories, Kollywood dramas, Tollywood rampage, Sandalwood salvages, and the other woods lost in their own world…

For those who do not follow much of Indian cinema;

Bollywood: Hindi Film Industry

Kollywood: Tamil

Tollywood: Telugu

Sandalwood: Kannada

(HOLLYWOOD – the house of English movies is probably the first of woods)

Indian cinema has seen an array of movies for the last century. It would be a shock to most Indians to know that over 1000 movies are released every year in India this age, many more projects disappearing in incompleteness.

Only a handful of them make it to the news and even lesser to the audience minds and hearts…

How do filmmakers decide on a movie and hope it would be a hit?

Prior success? Huge star cast? New technology? Mind blowing music? Or could be a mix of all these in the usual ‘masala’ movies that have been made during all ages of Indian cinema.

We do have a few outstanding movies. However, they are countable. Most others are a group of trial and error I suppose.

Some established producers spend huge amount on such weak scripts and spend unnecessarily.

Some established directors are stuck to their old formulae and have blocked their minds to think creatively.

Some film stars are happy with the stardom image and seldom bother bout the script or screenplay as long as their pockets are filled with a good sum.

And some innovative people are struggling their way up to make their voice heard and make some sensible movies but are usually discouraged or manipulated and they either get lost in the crowd or become one of the not so innovative film makers.

Let us talk about an example: ‘Taare Zameen par’ was a hit. I believe it was so because of Aamir Khan’s presence as the second lead role and the film maker. If the same concept was to be tried by a new comer, it would have been received with a lot of criticism and may or may not have become even a mediocre hit.

So what is the Indian audience looking for?

Some want to watch movies that makes one think – like Manirathnam ones which are for selected audience.

Some like particular genres of movie like action, comedy, romance, thrillers, horror, etc…

Some or should I say most look for plain entertainment.

And if that can be done so with a message not too heavy and not very obvious, wouldn’t it be a good formula that film makers could follow?

Whatever be the genre of the movie, Indian cinema needs more experimentation and innovation and not just waste of money into old blocks in the name of innovation.

Spending 125 crores on a single movie could make people curious about what the movie shall bring but does a good movie with good script and screenplay really need that kind of money?

India needs money for a better purposes but those apart we could still make so many better movies with the same amount spent one single star studded, car blowing movie.

It is for all of us to think…

Keep thinking…

Make a difference…

Sandalwood!!! I did not know that... by the way, good research from your part...

My point is, considering the fact that crores of rupees are going to some unfaithful politicians pocket,
its better that money is atleast spent for entertainment purpose and the lakhs of families who work in that industry...

Often film makers have faith in their story BUT how much of the original story is portrayed onscreen I guess...If the movie fails to do justice to a beautifully written story it can bomb at the box office or go on to become famous..cos the chose actors played better than the story required them to...

Then again its hard to say..many of the movies I enjoyed some times never made it big.

Maybe film makers prefer taking risks and learning from it..experimenting to understand audience likes and dislikes perhaps.. :)
